I seldom comment on a book but I do want to comment on this one ...
I've listened to many audio books over the years, as my husband and I both like to listen to audio books when we travel. We both enjoyed this book and although I figured out the ending somewhere on the first CD (I paused it and told my husband, "This is what happened, this is why he did what he did" - and I was right), that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book and Michael Beck's outstanding narration. This was the best book narration I've ever heard. The Best. I can't even think of a close second. I should give some credit to John Grisham, who created the characters and story line in the first place but - for me - it was Michael Beck who managed to turn this "I really liked it" four-star book into a mesmerizing five-star book.

So: legal procedural about a will contest AND involves race relations in the South? Sign me up! I read in the afterward that JG distinguishes his books as two types (which I will paraphrase as procedural and thriller). Though there is definitely overlap, I was happy to be back to a more procedural type of book. Many of Grisham's latest give me issue fatigue -- good stories but SO preachy. This one was a welcome break from that. There are social issues, definitely, but the characters did not give long soliloquies about them.

I am really enjoying the Jake Brigance novels by John Grisham. I finished the first one, A Time to Kill and once I realized there were more, I dove right into Sycamore Row. It is interesting with good characters and plot twists. They are well written and keep me enthralled. I really like the narrator, also, as his southern drawl adds to the enjoyment of the book. This same gentleman also narrated The Guardian, by John Grisham, which I really enjoyed!
A terrific book. What a treat to read a book and hear the voice of one of my favorite actors throughout the entire novel. Mr. Grisham does it again as he combines the elements of race and class. Matthew McConaughey must return as one of our all time favorite lawyers if this book becomes a movie. Great book. Thank you Mr. Grisham!
