Good Premise but so badly written, the story doesn't flow at all and could barely hold my attention, my 7 year old god bored two chapters in (for context he has read both books of this length and much longer books several times before)

My 2nd grader read this book to me after buying it at a book fair. It is the first in a new series from Scholastic. There were a few words scattered throughout that she had difficulty with, but for the most part it was a good fit book for her. It kept her entertained and she was excited to read it each night. It was not as scary as the title and cover picture might make you think. She actually laughed through most of it and was not at all scared. She is looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

This was a perfect book for beginning readers who want to read scary books but aren't ready for middle grade and higher scares. I thought the character Sam was relatable. He is charged with protecting his friends from the crazy school that is doing bad things to the students and teachers. As an adult I did want to know a little more about the janitor and why he picked Sam to be the school's newest protector, but I think most kids who read this won't fret about that they will just enjoy the cool scary story. Recommend to 1st to 3rd graders who like frightening fiction.

Just love this series - Sam becomes the hall monitor. And chaos ensues. But his friends can't see the school for what it really is - alive.

Gr 1-3 -- Who wants to be the Hall Monitor at a school called Eerie Elementary? Not Sam Graves, that’s for sure. He’s a little embarrassed at the shiny orange sash he has to wear as he patrols the halls, but when the playground sand tries to eat him and the school caretaker Mr. Nakobi tells him that it’s Sam’s job to keep the malevolent brick building in check, Sam can’t tell whether Mr. Nakobi is crazy - or he is.

Dynamic, cartoony illustrations underline the action and fun onomatopoiea provides atmosphere - Pow! Pow! - a vending machine fires water bottles at Sam, while CHOMP! CHOMP! a pile of metal folding chairs menaces the third grade cast of Peter Pan.

Readers who relish the action of Ricky Ricotta and the just-beyond-safe scares of R.L. Stine’s Rotten School may want to enroll at Eerie Elementary. Sam’s friends Antonio and Lucy are by his side (once he convinces them he hasn’t lost his mind), but a sentient, evil school is not a peril to be taken lightly.

This was a cute transitional chapter book that introduces readers to the horror or paranormal genre. Really loved the illustrations and the short but entertaining plot. This will be a great pick for an early reader looking for something spooky to read without it being too scary.

Much better than I expected. A beginning chapter book that is actually intense and scary. Perfect vivid language, and the illustration and design from page to page is simply perfect. This would make a great read aloud.
