Dark days suffers from a little bit of middle book syndrome, where it is clear that the Skulduggery pleasant series is becoming more than the sum of its parts. This book does a lot of heavy lifting setting up what is to come from the next entries.

However, that is not to say this is a bad book or even one of the worse entries in the series, the opposite. While not as good as the faceless ones, Dark Days is dark and intriguing. The characters are starting to show serious effects from their recent adventures. Skulduggery is rescued from his torture early on, but the torture stays with him. Tanith is showing cracks in her strength, and the bodies are piling up.

I do wish they had shown more of the anguish our characters are feeling, but of course the SP series is plot first, so there is too much for the characters to do to really sit down and think about how sad they are.

BEST BOOK SO FAR ARE YOU KIDDING? Perfect plot, builds so well on everything done so far, HORRIFIC??? In some places, the worldbuilding is so good and I'm adoring every character so far- the dialogue here was fucking unbelievable too and the plot twists and revelations?????? Woah.

"I'm here because I choose to be. You save my life. I save yours. That's how we work."

"Until the end."

"Until the end."

The ending in the Sanctuary tho ...
and of course the last chapter again ... shit

Dark Days abound, and the Skeleton detective will need to be responsible for saving thousands of mortal lives this time, too.

2.5 stars---16 year old son gives it 3, I give it 2.

Nearly 7 years ago, I read [b: The Faceless Ones|4893390|The Faceless Ones (Skulduggery Pleasant, #3)|Derek Landy|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1347680563s/4893390.jpg|4958838] to my sons. The remainder of the series wasn't readily available through my library, so we just stopped there. But lately my now 16-year-old (then 9 year old!) requested that we pick up the series again. I bought a used copy on Amazon, and we went from there. I remembered very little about the plot of the previous titles, and only could recall the two main characters.

That last part likely greatly affected my enjoyment of the book, for there were a TON of characters (never great when you're reading a book aloud), old and new, and most of those references went over my head. I also liked the humor sprinkled throughout the books, and the witty banter and sarcastic play between Skulduggery and Valkyrie. That was largely absent this time around, and Skulduggery doesn't even make an appearance in the early part of the book (as you'll probably expect if you remember the 3rd one, which, again, I did not).

My son said it was alright, but yeah, too much time had passed between readings. I told him if he wanted to keep reading the series, he'd need to do it on his own. He declined. RIP for me, Skulduggery series.

I thouroughly enjoyed this one, it feels like the stakes are getting higher and characters -including some recurring villains - are given more depth. I'll be diving straight into the next one
