Meh. I mean it was ok, but not in the slightest bit scary. I much preferred the Netflix adaptation- now that my friends was scary af.

I choose this as a Halloween reading. I had a lot of hopes and although I enjoyed the book, I couldn’t help but to feel letdown.
The author sure knows how to set the mood, I immediately felt transported to Hill House. The suspense scenes were built with mastery and the tension was palpable. The prose was very beautiful as well, and the dialogs between the characters were corky enough.
Other than that, the book felt rather void. I can see that The Haunting of Hill House set the foundations for all the thrillers to come, but there was hardly any story at all, no haunting other than some mysterious sounds, closing doors, and occasional visions. Hill House past was quicky unraveled in a dialog and there wasn’t really anything special about it; giving the genre, I excepted something much scarier.
The ending was unexpected and quite good, but I felt there should have been something more after that. The plot had much more potential than this.

Just wasn’t for me, I’m stepping into horror slow so it might be that I just don’t care for it that much. I think what Shirley set out to do, she did. I felt incredibly uncomfortable the whole time which I know was the point, I think I just don’t enjoy that feeling lol. If you like unbearable characters and tension and confusion then this will be right up your alley !
