I really don't know what I think about this collection of connected stories centering around Dominican immigrants on the East Coast. This collection is all about love, but not romance novel love. Here we have the serial cheaters and the messed-up families that result, primarily our main character, Junior, his brother, Rafael, and their father. The stories aren't in chronological order so it took me awhile to figure all that out, and maybe that's why I still feel like I'm missing something. The writing is very beautiful, and but I'm not sure I really care what happens to the characters.

I wouldn't advise buying it as a gift for your girlfriend, but I loved these short stories! I listened Díaz narrate the audiobook version, and his voice (and the latin music interspersed in-between stories) add so much to the feel and the context. Great!

Beautiful. Read it with a spanish-to-english dictionary close at hand.

I admire how the Spanish and other non-English languages are not italicized here. Somehow rhey seamlessly express the character's emotion and tell the story with such energy and urgency. It is indeed full of sex, raciness, libido that you'd think the main character of Yunior is just sex-addict and every other emotion is pointless. Maybe. But the interwoving stories are really engaging even if, I'd just realized, that mostly it's set in a small space; living room, bedroom, in a car, the kitchen. I admire how honest the characters are portrayed especially Yunior with all the flaws that until the end I hoped he'd manage to grow out of. I wonder if it's love, lust, or both. But this book at least tries to show to us how important faithfulness and honesty in a relationship is.
I wonder if the woman at the first part of the book, I believe Alma, is same with the seemingly true love he can't get over with at the latter part. Maybe a second read would help.

I consumed this book in audiobook form. Read by the author it felt very powerful. I would recommend this for anyone who needs a short audiobook. I don't think I would have found it as enjoyable reading it myself. The author's voice really brought Junior to life for me.
