It started really strong, I enjoyed the introduction of Shasta, his dreams, Hwin and Bree, and then mentioning King Edmund and Queen Susan. During the individual adventures of Aravis and Shasta, I was quickly detached from the storyline.

reading this was like engaging with someone deeply hyper fixated on the nature of enslavement as not a problematic but a fictive something or other that like can be escaped by a where with all. it was like a whole lot of nothing built into something. and i don’t think that’s bad. but i did not feel anything at all good about it. it just felt so out of left field and like idk maybe a little racist. it felt like i was taken on a journey of like reunion but never given a reason to invest in the characters? and maybe it was like because i didn’t get it or i wasnt fully invested but. i felt like i got dragged along on a journey to no where’s ville in nothing land and that i had to bring someone else’s bum ass kids with me. the motivation of which was like this patriarchal impulse for the colored man to take the white girls honor. the kids barely had lines so i wasn’t invested in them like i was invested in the core four for the first books. and i like can’t get over the … english colonialist subtext. idk. idk. i think it was written well. and was fine. and that's about all i’ve got to give it. i oftentimes liked the horses more than i liked the kids. 1.75 stars
