This is an oddly complicated book to me because it *was* good and enjoyable but the setting and the characters were such a mixed bag.
The enjoyable parts:
- I liked all the main characters and Bree was very fun to follow as a brash, self-confident talking horse, until he too fell victim to insecurity. I thought it was unfortunate we didn't get a follow-through with his reintroduction to Narnian society. I also particularly liked Aravis.
- the descriptions of the settings were great and the prose was wonderful to hear
- I liked the adventure aspect of this book, the entire journey was actively engaging
The mixed stuff:
- Susan: She's almost useless with the scheme to get out of the city and just spends that chapter tearfully apologizing for getting the Narnians into the situation. Later, Lucy appears, and Corin says that Susan is more of a normal woman in that she doesn't go to battles, but Lucy is "as good as a man". I do not need Susan to be a warrior-queen, but I need her to stand equal to her siblings at some point.
- the setting is extremely stereotypical and I kept going between the attitudes of "this was of the times" and "is this positive in any light". I know that Narnia is the point of this series and the goal of the book was to get to Narnia, but I really felt like there wasn't anything worth going back to in Calormen even though it was the birthplace/formative years of the main characters.
- and was anyone good in Calormen? The closest was Lasaraleen, who was described as very silly and airheaded, and couldn't fathom rebellion even after hearing a horrible plan straight from the Tisroc, and tried to convince her friend into going back to a marriage with an old, ugly, sycophant man.
The other stuff:
-I would be SO MAD if my long-lost twin, lost at age 1 week old, returned and got handed the kingdom. I don't care that Corin is okay with this, it's the principle of it and they're children right now anyways
-It is ridiculous that even in Narnia, donkeys are an insult. I understand he wasn't a talking donkey but there was no inherent respect for the new form?
- Aslan was very present in this one.
