The Unteachables

4.25 AVERAGE

I may be a *little* biased because this is a classic story of teacher burnout and redemption! Mr. Kermit is on the verge of early retirement and has spiraled from being one of the best teachers to the absolute worst because of a cheating scandal he had nothing to do with and was targeted by the superintendent for the last twenty years because it made him look bad. To ensure Mr Kermit wouldn’t get his early retirement, Superintendent Thaddeus insists that Kermit get the “Unteachables”- a group of kids that all teachers have written off.
The collection of kids includes: a new girl who never bothered to register and just decides to stay in that class; a kid who has dyslexia that no teacher assisted with; a jock who did no work become no one ever expected him to so long as he was a sports star, but after an injury that sidelined him, no one had time for him; a kid with anger issues; an artist who would daydream his schooldays away; etc.
Together, unexpectedly, they help bring out the best in each other and their teacher. It’s such a fantastic story about redemption and the power of never giving up on a kid, no matter how “unteachable” everyone else says they are.

This was such a great book with a great message, I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed reading Gordon Korman when I was kid, so thought I would try reading a new book. Korman still has his great humour, and the ability to tell a story that keeps you interested till the end. This is a middle school version of The Breakfast Club - a group of misfits put together as they are deemed as hopeless. In charge is a teacher that no longer cares about his job or the kids. Can they learn to work together and show everyone that they are teachable?

I really enjoyed this book. As a neurodiverse person who wasn't diagnosed until adulthood, I saw my younger self in multiple characters. The characters really were the highlight of this story. The students, the two main teachers, and the car dealer guy were all fun to read about. I wanted to see how their story would end. My favorite character was probably Parker, but I also really liked Mr. Kermit. Overall, I would definitely recommend.

The Unteachables are a group of misfits, former sports stars, and train wrecks of academic preformance.  The entire book swicthes perspecitives, causing the same evnts to be seen from different points of views. The book has some very emtional moments and makes the whole book feel like a true underdog story. The one and only problem I have with this book is that it just blends in with the rest of Gordon Korman's books. Other than that, the Unteachables is a nice quick read leaving the reader with a sense of joyfullness once it finishes.

This book was about a group of kids who are supposedly "unteachable" and they turn their teachers teaching career around. I did not always feel intrested in the book, as it got boring in some parts and kind of slow. It did have some special twists to it and the ending was pretty predictable. I gave this book a 3.5 because of the slowness and the predictability of the end. I did like some of the characters, but others seemed unimportant and forgetable.

What a great story! I’m a big fan of Korman recently and need to keep reading his books! This was a funny, heartwarming story that would be a great read aloud to a 5-8 grade classroom.

This was a pleasant book to help my brain float away from the current situation in the world. Each chapter changes perspectives to a different person in the class, including the teacher, principal, and even superintendent. It’s hard for me to imagine middle school kids getting really into it, but I enjoyed it enough for what it was. At the end, where there is the preview for the next book coming out, however, that was so boring that I couldn’t even finish it. Yikes.
