My friend used to bring these books in to geography class and we'd sit at the back of the room reading each new volume as she managed to borrow them from her uncle, and having the best time. And I have wanted to read Saga properly since and it's such a delight to discover that it's just as great as I remember. The art is beautiful and the story is great and the whole concept is wonderful. Character design?? Amazing.

There are lots of little details I love. Like how the characters speaking Blue are just speaking Blue and it doesn't translate them. And there are all these different species because it's space and why not. And that each of the Landfall and Wreath citizens have slightly different wings/horns.

wow. this book's the epitome of perfect art AND story, a feat rarer than rare. ive never been a fan of space opera, or hell, even sf, rly, but book one of saga blows me outta the water. an adventurous story centering on an intergalactic chase of a pair of star-crossed parents caught in a decades old war (a concept reminiscent of DoSaB) story deals w/ meaty themes of family, war, violence; w/ a copious dose of chuckle- and snort-inducing wry humor; expansive and impressive world(s)building; jawdropping cliffhangers; a cast of fleshed out characters w/ intricate relationships; and, sth i rly appreciate, diversity in not only race, sexuality, but also life forms, as befitting its sweeping setting.

however, the story's def mature, w/ plenty of gory, bloody killings and violence, sex scenes, and adult topics like pedophilia and slavery. the art though...holy fcking sh!t, this graphic novel has easily the most incredible comics art ive ever seen--there were plenty of times where a page or a cover art simply rendered me speechless, stunned for several seconds bc of its sheer awesomeness. needless to say, i am now a fiona staples worshipper. kinda intimidated to discover that the series is only half way done, but im def along for this long ride.
