Excellent well written story that flips from 1991 back to time of the salem witch trials. I found it a very enjoyable read full of history and a little bit of magic.

Thanks to B&N First Look Book Club I was able to read this wonderful debut novel. Katherine Howe has a wonderful gift of descriptive writing that makes you feel like you are right there in the story. Quite a feat seeing the novel takes place in two different time periods. I have not read much about the Salem Witch Trials so I found the the history aspect very intriguing. Katherine Howe kept my interest peaked with the past and present story lines and how they relate to each other. It definitely is a page turner. You don't want to miss this one! I can't wait to see what this author writes next!
A lot of this is predictable, and some of it made me roll my eyes at Connie’s cluelessness. But it’s a fun story and if you like all things witchy, I recommend it.
An excellent mix of history, mystery, and academia. I loved the main character, Connie, and her explorations into the Salem witch trials. I enjoyed learning second hand about the trials and their effects not only on the accused but their families and descendants. It was a quick read and I found myself wanting this book to go on. Great plot, great characters, and an original concept.
Aside from what other reviews may say, I happen to think that this was one of the best books I have read in a while. A few pages in, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. When I wasn’t reading, I was eager to get back into it. I stumbled upon this book my accident and I am very glad I did!
I really enjoyed this book which is surprising as I don't typically read a lot of historical fiction. However, this book hit a lot of notes that I like in a good book- libraries, a gothic house that could be haunted, and a duel timeline. The only reason why I didn't give it five stars was that I found the villain to be too predictable. I knew who the villain was early on and I like to be surprised.

So, I'm a sucker for just about anything that makes historical research seem cool. Hidden sources? Witches? Evil advisors? Handsome preservationists? I'm there!
While not nearly as good as The Heretic's Daughter, I did enjoy it and thought the conceit that witchcraft was real was carried off fairly believeably. The homage to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's "A Midwife's Tale" made me very happy.
But I'm still confused why the "modern" part was set in 1991.

This book was a little slow at times but altogether a fun book. The plot is fairly unique and has an exciting twist.
