I figured out who the murderer was within the first few chapters, so it was a little bit of a let-down for me. I didn't think the characters were very interesting or likeable, either. That being said, I read the second book in the series and found it significantly better, so I will stick with these for awhile longer. I know I it's easy to be critical as a reader--I don't mean to sound like snob. I hope the books continue to improve.
This book is my introduction to Karin Slaughter. I like her characterization and their secrets being slowly revealed. Overall, though, I didn't find this had too many twists and turns. It kept me guessing till the end, but it also didn't really drop hints until the last few chapters of the book. So I didn't feel drawn in as much as I'd have liked. Being Slaughter's first book, its a strong one, and I'd read more by her though perhaps more of a standalone.
Spoiler
I did drop it down a star for the scene of rape. We already know what he's doing, and its graphic, I didn't need to have that experienced in a toned-down way by Lena

I really enjoyed how the three POVs came together and the characters. At times it was tricky but it’s a five for me because I was on my toes looking for answers the whole time

Wow. 5 stars without a doubt.
I had read a few Karin Slaughter books before deciding to go right back to the beginning and it was the best choice. The story was brutal as hell, it kept me guessing and Karin Slaughter’s writing and storytelling is, as always, beautiful.
This deserves to be at the very top of your TBR if you’re interested in dark, brutal and twisty storylines.

1.0 stars - I DNF'D @ 82% but there was no way I wasn't marking this trash as read
UTTER SHITE! I would be surprised if this isn't my least favourite book of 2020 and its only January.
Since Karin Slaughter is so widely acclaimed I can only hope she has gotten better from here. I just want a police procedural where the cops actually try to solve the crime and 70% of the book isn't made up of the officers personal melodrama. I liked that the character had backgrounds but so much this book was people arguing and fighting with each other while a serial rapist/killer is on the loose. I got to 80% and there were still no clues, no real suspects, no reason to care about the mystery, and then the two romance interests got into another fight.
This book is full of police officers assaulting suspects who may shitty people are still innocent and have rights. Just because you can be graphic/gorey doesn't mean you have to unless it serves the book.
