Honestly impressed that this dragged 3.5 (rounded down) stars out of me despite how much I hated the protagonist
I couldn't stand the narration for a while because I couldn't empathize with him at all. I found him annoying and awful and was churning through the book just to get it over with. You might say ah, but sometimes characters are unlikeable; that's not necessarily a marker of poor writing. To which I would counter, yes, but when they're assholes for seemingly no rhetorical purpose whatsoever, then I as a reader lose interest. The world already has plenty of stories about men with a blatant, nearly sociopathic disregard for their family and community; I don't care about nor need another one.
As the story progressed, I did start to understand why the author wrote such an unlikable character and how that tied into the novel's broader social themes. Statovci writes artfully, and I ultimately found this to be a rewarding and well-crafted read. Not for the faint of heart, though--this book's a real downer.
NOTE: The 13 November journal entry was unexpectedly disturbing. Just know that going in.

Vittu.
Kielellisesti kaunis, kyyninen. Mitä turhautumista oman seksuaalisuuden peittäminen voikaan aiheuttaa ihmisessä. Raskas, ja reilu kaksisataasivuiseksi kirjaksi mielestäni jopa liian pitkä. Kuvaus rappiosta alkaa olla jo kärsimyksellä mässäilyä loppua kohden.
