The other reviews are right in that the book comes together in the final third. Before that I'd been expecting to give it two stars. Part of the problem I think was the audio book format. The narrator's performance is a little too convincing for the teenagers, especially as they make absolutely ridiculous decisions (Roanoke's native predators for example) and spout general teenage-drama nonsense. In the end I did enjoy it as a fan of the series, and I definitely warmed to Zoe, but it's the weakest book by far, and I'm hoping for more from The Human Division.

I was all prepared to just tolerate this one because of the teenage voice. It was definitely a 3-star read through the first half, listening on Audible to a female reader who captured the snark well enough that I could visualize every eye roll. But I actually ended up really enjoying the book.
Watching Zoe become the ambassador that I hope she does as the series continues was great! Scalzi shows she's her father's daughter and I loved that. The refresher course on the series was nice too since it's taken me so long to come back to it. Moving on to book 4!

Scalzi does a great job finding his snarky teenage girl voice. Zoe's Tale filled in some of the holes I wanted to know more about from The Last Colony with really interesting backstory.
I wish I'd read the afterword first. Mostly I was just annoyed at having to reread the events of the previous book without new developments. Scalzi's note at the end gave me a much larger appreciation of the book, but it does lack a certain shininess the others in the series have in spades.
What can I tell you about Zoe’s Tale other than the fact that I loved it and that you should definitely read it? I suppose I could tell you why right?
First of all the best part about Zoe’s Tale is Zoe herself. A sarcastic, witty, intelligent girl I couldn’t help but think if that her story was told by someone else with only half her charm the story would not have snared me quite as effectively. Zoe felt so real and she was so likable that I wish that I could meet her in person. I’ve never read a character so self-aware and honest with herself that I have to give props to Mr. Scalzi for writing a teenage girl so well. Read more
