I was expecting to be a bit bored by a POV switched retelling of Last Colony, but boy was I wrong. This was so fun and probably the most emotional I’ve gotten in this series so far. We get some further plot point developments from the previous book, as well as a better idea of who Zoe is and just how big of a role she played in the events of Last Colony. Love these characters and love the writing. Almost mad at Scalzi for letting me get to know Enzo better. Also Dickory is my best friend.

This was definitely my favorite book in the OMW series. I can't wait to see what Tuesday thinks of it.

A middle aged man writing (poorly) from the perspective of a teenage girl is just about the last thing I want to read.

Another book in the Old Mans War series told from the viewpoint of Zoe - the daughter of John from previous books. The story covers the same time period as The Last Colony, but the author manages to bring new insights and situations to a story where you know what was going to happen. This is a difficult thing to pull off, but the author manages it well

As I've said before, Scalzi trades fast paced action and excitement for depth. He doesn't quite do much emotional stuff, usually just one or two big moments in a whole book and some little ones and he stays with one character the entire novel. His books are good, great even, but I do sometimes miss a little bit of extra. Too much telling, not enough showing. So what happened here is, he just rewrote his previous novel but simply from a different point of view. An odd idea but it worked, it was fun to read and filled in a few blanks left from the previous one. In the end though, I couldn't help but wonder why he just didn't put all this stuff in the previous novel. He seems a little scared to write a book that is too long. A shame. This book is probably gonna be polarising, I for one liked it. Still loving this series despite the few flaws.
