In the Old Man's War series, Zoe's Tale takes us back to everything that happens in The Last Colony: the founding and survival attempts of the colon' on Roanoke.
While it would be easy to dismiss this book as it doesn't take the story forward, it is actually a very good read. Zoe shows us the daily life on Roanoke through the eyes of someone who, while in a better position than most, doesn't have all the knowledge her parents have and seems to be sitting on the side of the main action.
It is, however, a deception, and we discover as we go that Jane and John don't know everything that happens. After all, how could busy parents know everything their teenage daughter is doing, specially in a middle of a galactic war when you also rely on said daughter's alien bodyguards?
Definitely a book to read if you enjoyed the first books in the series.

When I read this series a few years ago I skipped this one because I heard it was pointless. I finally decided to read (well, listen) to it as a refresher for the new one. I was expecting to hate it because YA is not my thing but it was fine. But, yes, it was pointless.
