It was pretty good. I gave it 4 stars because of the epic Alfred/Bruce fight.

I didn’t like this retelling of Batman’s origin at first - Thomas Wayne is running for mayor, Gordon turns a blind eye to crime, Bullock is a handsome TV star; and then midway through all the pieces fall into place. The dots are connected and the ending is superb.

Masterful storytelling.

I haven't read a lot of Batman stuff, so I can't really judge how this one is compared to the others, but what I can say is that, I absolutely enjoyed this!

Batman: Earth One is Bruce Wayne's origin story.

Yeah.

Origin stories have been done multiple times, and I get it if you're going to roll your eyes and say, "Shit. Not again." But hear me out, this is not like any Batman origin story I have seen yet. But you also keep in mind that my knowledge of Batman's origins depended solely on what the movies have shown me so far. I haven't read a lot of DC, but I'm getting really curious after my accidental infatuation with The Flash, I realized that I need to give the other Justice League members a try.

I have read Hush though. When I read that the first time, I thought I really enjoyed it, but after reading it again this year, I realized how shitty the story was, so I decided to grab another Batman comic book - so I got Batman: Earth One. I'm actually pretty happy I did because this was fantastic.

I really liked how his origin was shown on this one. You don't get to see the entirety of his childhood, but you do get to see the important ones, like the death of his parents, how he ended up in Alfred's care (which was so cool by the way! one of my favorite parts), how and when he decided to be the Dark Knight, how he got beaten up and almost died a couple of times. It really fleshed out Bruce's character so much. His origin was very familiar, but also new at the same time.

I really liked about this was how Batman seemed like a real human being. He was vulnerable and breakable, so unlike how he was, often, portrayed - at least to the ones I have read. He falls and get beaten up a couple of times, but you'll see his unwavering determination in finding out who killed his parents. It was just so good to read about and see.

Also, I don't want to forget to mention how absolutely hot Bruce Wayne is in this incarnation. Haha. Yeah. He's really drool-worthy. Sorry. Not sorry. Well done Gary Frank! I'll be looking out for your other illustrations. *giggles*

I didn't only like Batman/Bruce, I also liked how they spun off the characters we are already all familiar with, like Alfred (who was so badass), Jim Gordon (who was starting to get back to being a good cop), Harvey Dent (not sure if Jessica Dent was also a previous character), Oswald Cobblepot (aka the Penguin), Barbara Gordon, Moroni (who I recognized from Gotham the TV series), but they were all given slightly different but also similar roles in this story.

Would I recommend this? Highly! I'm reading the next one now!

I finished this book in one quick, thoroughly enjoyable sitting despite having a rough day, and at the end was torn between giving it 4 or 5 stars. "How did Geoff Johns write a comic this well?!!?" I asked myself. "I haaaate everything I've ever read by him!" But this is such a great, tidy re-characterization of so many Gothamites that I'm giving it the full 5 stars.

I loved seeing Batman failing repeatedly, entering fights he can't win, not being very observant or detective-like, and having to be built and propped up by the likes of Badass Bearded Alfred Pennyworth, Crowed and Soul-sold Jim Gordon, and Slick Hollywood Reality Show Host Harvey Bullock. It could have easily become slapstick or parody, but instead it's just a fantastically designed alternate reality where heroes and villains roles have been turned by just a few degrees.

My fellow fans of badass women in comics who hate the fridging and disabling of damsels in distress tropes: here we see a young Barbara Gordon totally take matters into her own hand and fight her way out of certain peril pretty much better than Batman or the cops trying to save her. I'm really excited to see her development, as well as more appearances by Montoya and Killer Croc.

Because of my very low opinions of Geoff Johns as an intelligent script-writer, I was wary of starting Earth One at the beginning, since I was mostly interested in catching up so the upcoming [b:Wonder Woman: Earth One, Volume 1|25241697|Wonder Woman Earth One, Volume 1|Grant Morrison|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1443562789s/25241697.jpg|44961164] would make more sense (unnecessary, from what I've heard, but I like to explore worlds sequentially). Now when I see his name on the credits of so many big things, instead of rolling my eyes, thinking "Another hack who was really just better at climbing up the business world ranks," I can say, "He did a really good job with Batman: Earth One! Have you read it?"

A really good retelling of the origin story. A twist here and there. Just read it.

I am a big fan of Geoff Johns, who is great at reinvigorating a character, which makes sense for Earth One. I haven't done any research as to why this line was created, but it feels like an answer to Marvel's Ultimate Comics. Letting go of the weight of continuity.

One of my favorite things about alternate universes is how you can defy expectations. Johns shakes things up just enough for this not to feel like Year One with smart phones.
