The Dark Forest on its own is 4 stars, but taken with The Three-Body Problem, it is a full 5.
Suspenseful, gripping, plotted and paced masterfully. Liu Cixin knows how to set up stakes, and then escalate, and then escalate, and then escalate. This is the perfect companion to the narrative arc of The Three-Body Problem, and that ending made me yell it was so delicious.
Not sure why we needed a third book to be honest.

The first 180 pages are terrible. The rest of it is 100% worth that slog. Please do not ever refer to your wife as ‘childlike’.

Cixin Liu’s understanding/reflection on human nature and society introduce terrifying concerns about the future of humanity in the face of external global threat. The power and threat of individualism, complacency, overconfidence, and stagnant thinking all pose threats to continued human evolution. His theories and world create pause for concern, exciting “what ifs”, and intimidating hypotheses. This is a book on humanity.
