“For thousands of years, my kind had been thought of as nothing more than the stone sculptures perched upon the rooftops of homes and churches. Aka gargoyles. And technically, that’s what we were – but the depiction of a gargoyle was vastly exaggerated. Even the ugliest of all Wardens didn’t have a bulbous nose or fangs jutting from his mouth. It was rather insulting when you thought about it.”

-Jennifer L. Armentrout, Bitter Sweet Love

Bitter Sweet Love is the prequel novella in the Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Bitter Sweet Love introduces the world of Wardens and demons. It sets up a lot of background for the first book in the series White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout. This novella is revolves around the relationship of Jasmine and Dez, who are mentioned and make appearances in White Hot Kiss.

I love that this was about Jasmine and gave a lot of background information to what is going on in the world. When she is mentioned in White Hot Kiss there is not much said about her and her history so it was nice to be able to learn more about her and her role in the world. I feel like usually in novellas if it is from a different person's point of view it is usually telling their perspective from a certain incident. I loved that this was nothing like that. This novella was a story from the past and helped to build some of the story that is to come later. I wish I would have read this before I read White Hot Kiss. I just felt like this was more of a love story and made me like it less than White Hot Kiss, but I still enjoyed it.

huh, 2 gargoyle stories in one day

I didn't even know Gargoyles was the new big thing
But I thought this one lacked a lot of the interesting lore and history of gargoyles

and the characters were just meh.

maybe I would like it more if I'd read it after book 1?

Overall, this has been a nice dive back to the dark elements universe. However, the story was a bit too cheesy even for this genre, the plot predictable and really the main "secret" reveal was just lame. Some of the plotlines are clearly ripped of from the main series (for example Dez's arrival to the clan) and the main character is basically Layla with a small twist. Not much new here..
Overall an ok, nostalgic read, but unless you really like the series and want a lookback without reading the whole thing again, don't bother.

An interesting start to the series. Love the whole gargoyle and demon premise. I'm hoping, even if the series is about Layla and Zayne, we get to see more of Dez and Jas.

I have read so many Jennifer L. Armentrout books this year it's ridiculous. But her books are addicting I can't help it!

Even though I ADORE her books I don't really like her prequels that much. They are good but not like her series. THEY ARE AMAZING.

In Bitter Sweet Love, we basically were informed about the characters and the world. I have to admit Dez was really cute but SERIOUSLY I NEED TO READ ZAYNE'S STORY RIGHT NOW! He looks awesome and we saw him in like 10 pages. I also really liked Layla. She looks really cool as well.

I'm super excited for this new series!

Short and Sweet

This was such an adorable and sweet novella. I really wish there was more!! The relationship between Dez and Jas is so pure and sweet I wish I could bottle it up.

Great start

To be honest I wasn't sure if I would like this. Gargoyles? But because I'm such a huge fan of JLA I thought I would give it a try. Now I'm wondering why did I doubt. It was good. I really enjoyed it. Now can't wait to read the rest of the series

You know when something is just amazingly absolutely awesome. When it's beautifully crafted. When it... when it's so, so perfect... the right words to describe it just aren't good enough or don't do it enough justice?

Well JLA's BOOKS are like that. No amount of praise and extra heaping of awesome-sauce can truly describe how great her books are. I mean there probably - most likely - be a way but this woman is just an AMAZING STORYTELLER! You really do connect with her characters.

And if Bitter Sweet Love got me hot, excited and hooked... can you imagine what I'll be like with White Hot Kiss?!?

Jennifer L. Armentrout, if you are reading this review right now, girl get yourself a cookie - or two. :D

Happy reading! :)
