I bought this second hand, no idea why, never heard of it and had no expectations. I am in tears after finishing it. This book was better than any fable has a right to be. It was beautifully emotional all the way through.

She desperately wanted to go with her baby.
A touching story of a mother who dreamed to follow her baby forever.

A beautiful Korean fable that is reminiscent of Animal farm and Fup.

This sweet tale describes the longing of a battery farmed chicken to escape her coop and raise her own egg, fulfilling her desire to become a mother.

This story is filed with allegories of motherhood, death and society. Although some accuse it off being heavy handed I would strongly disagree, not everything that is praised for being subtle is actually very good. This however is a wonderful insight into Korean society and a must read for anyone and everyone no matter their literary tastes.

I spotted this in a second-hand book shop and I just had to purchase it. Books sometimes do that - they call out, don't they? This is a little book told about a hen on a farm and the animals all communicate - very much like Animal Farm. Our little hen, Sprout, is - I think - a sort of battery hen.  she lives in a cage and her eggs fall into a trough and are collected. Sprout wants to be a mum, she wants to sit on an egg. But, she is ill and stops laying so she is discarded and left for dead. But she survives! Not only that, but she find an abandoned egg! She sits on it and it hatches, but instead of a chick, it's a .... But Sprout loves it. This is a story of motherhood, or bravery as Sprout stands up the the evil weasel who wants her 'baby'. It's also the story of love and sacrifice and yes - there were tears. I'm not ashamed to admit it. I am so glad that this little book called out  to me. It was a special read. Rounded up to 5*

for a storytelling that echoes children's books this was NOT for children. or it is if you want your kid to cry endlessly.

bawled like a baby. beautiful and poignant, the social commentary is kind of too in the nose but it works anyways.
