Short read, with themes of motherhood/adoption, told from the perspective of a hen. I found it a little boring, and a little repetitive, but overall a sweet, easy read.
When life is rough now I’ll think “it could be worse, I could be a hen on a farm in a chicken coop where all I can do is lay eggs or if I escape to the barn yard, I could hatch a baby chick but they’ll probably be eaten by rodents before they hatch or taken away when they’re older and killed for food.”

This is a story about an egg-laying hen named Sprout, who longs for freedom from her cage and dreams of hatching an egg of her own. Sprout is a rebel and she ultimately escapes from her cage but she is yet to face many hardships before her dream comes true.
This little book is one of the sweetest books I've read. Yes, it's about motherhood, friendship, survival, dreams, accepting oneself, self persistence, love, and family. It's about breaking free from shackles of the society and choosing your own path. Sprout is one bad-ass heroine and I'm sure a lot of us would want to have the courage that Sprout has shown.
“A sprout is the mother of flowers,” Sprout explained. “It breathes, stands firm against rain and wind, keeps the sunlight, and rears blindingly white flowers. If it weren’t for sprouts, there’d be no trees. A sprout is vital.”
Sprout gave the name "Sprout" to herself and how fitting it is to her character. I love how this book made me feel and realize so much in just a few simple words. It's a short and beautiful read.
