Being a bona fida crazy chicken lady, I obviously gravitated to this book. The beautiful cover and the illustrations drew me in to the story but Hwang's words held me there. I endlessly searched for the deeper political meaning shown through the events of the barnyard. My knowledge of Korean politics is limited but I was able to see Sprout's struggles as universal.
It began with Sprout's determination to better her life when she was caged, and was quickly followed by the cruelty of the other barnyard animals once she became free. Accepting her exclusion from the farm, she attempted to make her own way and grappled with a steep learning curve as she tried to figure out how to live alone outside of the barnyard. Finding the egg gave her hope and she found strength to overcome her fear of the weasel. With a young one to care for, she became stronger-willed than any other animal and was ready to sacrifice herself for her chick. Love gives her reason to live.
Perhaps it is simply enough to say that, after reading this lovely novella, I named one of the baby chicks in my flock Sprout.
