Very frustrating to read. It is not just the characters are cynical, but the author seems to be quite disillusioned by identity politics and journalism overall. Perhaps more detailed characterization, rather than just presenting their grievances, would give the commentary more substance.

I expected to like this book more. Strong premise and first chapter but the book ends up sounding more like a fictive essay of sorts. I read for one of two reasons— to immerse myself in a world foreign to myself or to better understand concepts and perspectives I’m not typically privy to. This book starts up sounding like the former and ending like the latter. It had potential but fell flat for me personally.
