I didn’t really get the point of this book. Like bad short fiction extended over and over again to become a novel - no bueno.

Universality is split into five chapters, all following different characters. I liked the first part, A Fool's Gold. It was relevant but not overbearing, and had an interesting premise. The rest of the book was…bad. Characters in A Fool's Gold were all flawed, but they felt multi-dimensional and/or interesting to read about. Some characters from the first chapter were in others, but their characterisation felt flat. New characters felt like caricatures, and everyone became incredibly unlikable. Not fun-unlikable, but Twitter user unlikable. Also, the neat handling of modern political issues went down the fucking drain. 85% of the next four chapters were political arguments and tangents.
