Undeniably beautifully written, when looking past the instances of racism. I’m glad I read this now (older, much happier, getting better) instead of when I was 19–20, anxious, and depressed in college like Esther. Back then, it probably would have made me feel worse and helped me romanticize what I was going through. I can understand why this story is a favorite for many who resonate with Esther/Plath and find in her words a beautiful articulation of their own pain.
I was most deeply moved by the way Plath conveys the suffocating pressure of choosing a path in life, especially when you don’t yet know what you want for yourself, while so many futures seem possible. The fig tree passage will likely stay with me for a long time.

I wanted to love this book and maybe I will revisit in the future but both book and audio had me wanting to pull a Sylvia.
(Note, this isn't a slam at MH. I just can't get on with classics because I'm too basic).
