A beautiful, delightful book set in 1940s San Fransico at the heart of the LGBTQ+ community, Passing Strange is filled with such rich detail that it felt like I was walking down the same streets as Haskel and Emily. Passing Strange is a story of love, friendship, and history that has a wry sense of humor and doesn't shy away from the harsher realities of the past. I was entranced by this book from the start and then Diego Rivera showed up and I couldn't put it down.

Ladies exploring gender and falling in love in the 1940's. Also, one of them is an artist for pulp covers. Enough said.
Good things this book has:
- positive representation of a bisexual character for whom her sexuality does not define her
- fairly accurate historical details (from my own limited knowledge/research)
- a gross gatekeeping misogynist bookseller getting fucked over
- a happy ending for at least two queer lady couples
- a tiny bit of magic sprinkled here and there
