I had a lovely time with this story, my only observation is that the different povs are not clearly distinguished, they blend into each other and not having a strong voice for each character in such a short narrative did get frustrating at times.
The strongest chapter in my opinion was the first, what a hook, practically a whole story on its own almost a prequel which is also an epilogue.
I know I’m leaning on the lower side of the rating scale despite giving an high decimal there…but it feels more accurate to my feelings at the end of the experience.
Still, I would recommend this pretty universally and add on top of that: I only spend a couple days in San Francisco but the atmosphere? Yes, it’s all there.
Minor: Homophobia, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Racism, Suicide, Police brutality, Lesbophobia, Sexual harassment
Short version:
Guaranteed to be one of my top books of the year, if not number one. I actually made myself put it down after a chapter or two each night so I wouldn't finish too quickly. Part of the joy is going in blind and I suggest you do the same, so if the blurb interests you go read it. Now-ish. :)
Long version:
I'm going to say as much as I can while giving away as little as possible. Characters live and breathe in a city that does the same. The plot is wonderfully paced within an intriguing structure and the writing is as beautiful as it is unobtrusive.
Our heroines live the best life they can despite the homophobia and racism and other miasmas that hang over San Francisco in 1940. They struggle, but they are not defined by that struggle. They aren't damaged or any less themselves. These women do what they can, do what they must, and above all, persist.
I know I haven't done the book justice so... go. Read it. An enthusiastic, wholehearted recommend.

Uh, I'd like some story in all that setting. Also, for the POV to not jump from head to head without rhyme or reason. Would've been nice...
Well, it wasn't all bad. The premise was interesting and the plot itself - while slow and a bit flat - at least made sense.

I'm a bay area native so this has a special place in my heart. Loved getting to see the older queer version of the city. Good read though I wish there had been a little more magic.
