A fun story about women who love each other, with fun, mystery and tenderness.
The writing's a bit confusing sometimes and you sometimes don't know who's in the room or who's talking, but apart from that it's very nice to read through the story and get immersed in it, San Francisco is described with such love you can see the buildings, the streets, the lights…
The characters are intriguing and colorful: a scientist, a witch, a young woman who's still very witty, a butch woman…
I love how easily I was transported in that time, where women and men had very distinct roles and you had to be brave and bold to try and go against those standards. It was a nice, comfortable read that will stay in me while I reflect on all the magic and mystery that remains.

...can I just get the tor.com novellas delivered to me when they come out and save some time?
This book was basically everything I wanted it to be. And it made me smile too.

I enjoyed this - there was enough plot to keep it going, and enough happened to keep me interested! I also quite enjoyed the characters. However, it didn’t really grab me like I wanted it to, and it definitely didn’t stick with me for very long. Ultimately, I enjoyed it, but it’s not one I’m going to keep thinking about.
Well this was a surprise, a pleasant one.
The opening was intriguing for sure but I could not have predicted who and what the story would be about from the opening chapters. In fact, I wondered why the idea of magic was even introduced.
Then, the twists and turns of the story really transported me back to another time and place and had me rooting for our protagonists.
Tor is really setting the bar high with their novellas.

Loved the first section of the book, got invested in the POV character. Then when the flashbacks start that same character who was so arresting and sparkling in the first section is just... a side character to the main romance. And listen, I wouldn't be so sad about the focus of the story not being where I thought it would, but frankly, neither of the real main characters seemed as interesting in comparison!
That said it's a well written story, beautiful work, I think there's readers who'll enjoy this anyway, just... I never got over the disappointment of realizing "oh, she's NOT the protagonist? we're not going to learn more about her?"

A gem of a novella, with magic providing a chance for a happy ending which reality denies.
