*Sigh* When a book is marketed as "HP" meets "Gilmore Girls" and cozy small town magical vibes, you go in expecting a low stakes, cozy magical fantasy without stress. This was the biggest click-bait book I have EVER read. You have a main character that suffers from severe trauma and anxiety, multiple traumatic scenes, an emotionally abusive husband, trashy small town people, and a multitude of other problems.
Maybe I am generous giving it a 3 stars; however, the plot did pick up somewhere around the 2/3rds mark and I was determined to finish this for a buddy read.
What I expected - cozy. What I got - trauma, a shit ton of trauma Debra!

Was unsure between 3.75 and a 4, decided to settle on the lower rating. While I did thoroughly enjoy the book overall, it wasn't flashy. A nice swing for in-between.
Somewhere around the halfway mark I started really disliking most characters for some time. Everyone seemed annoying, especially Daniel kept bugging me. Eventually Vivian also got on my nerves with how oblivious she seemed? Although I absolutely understood where they were coming from, having experienced similar things myself (friendship struggles, connection loss, the such), I just couldn't deal with them not settling it or understanding it.
Thankfully, around the 75% mark it settled down again as the plot picked up and everything fell into place (although latest then the story and ending felt extremely spelt out for you).
Maybe a few more chapters could've helped in some places to elaborate some things in the world and rush the plot less, but I feel like overall, the book settled itself well enough to be an enjoyable read overall and was exactly what was promised.

Pros: labeled as Gilmore Girls meets HP...and yeah, it's cozy vibes with a magic school. Interesting family and school dynamics for mythological and fantastical beings. Cute Kindergarten wolf pup.
Cons: The writing style wasn't for me - very little dialogue for most of the book. Gaslighting. Miscommunication for a trope. The "Do I care enough to finish it?" for at least 50% of the book.
