adventurous emotional funny mysterious slow-paced

Just finished this one as part of @readwithnicole_’s Wild and Weird book club. The Cabinet is a curious and peculiar book, both in its contents and in format. It follows the life of our main character, Mr Kong, who has been left in charge of guarding the contents of an ordinary looking filing cabinet, Cabinet 13. The contents of the cabinet are hundred era of files, containing years of research into “symptomers” of the world. Symptomers include some of the following: a woman who hides a lizard under her tongue; a man who finds himself turning into a toothpick and a man who is growing a ginkgo tree from his finger. Pure boredom and curiosity were what attached Mr Kong to Cabinet 13, but the burden of overlooking these files soon becomes a lot to bear. The Cabinet is written in a short story format, with a fable-like feel to each section, whilst also following the main story of Mr Kong’s past and present life. I’ve not really read anything similar to this in format, but I do think it works. However, I much preferred being invested in Mr Kong’s life, and, although the stories of the symptomers added to the uniqueness and weirdness of the book, they didn’t grip me as much as the “main” story. All in all, I did enjoy it and would recommend if you like the weird and surreal feeling kind of books. 3.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 rounded down
