The main character is intelligent and relatable. The story is complex enough to provoke interest, but not so complex that it becomes unnecessarily confusing. Overall, good book without a cheesy ending and some snappy dialogue
I liked it. This book was a good combination of a spy novel and excellent historical detail. Will read the sequel next.

This was a really promising first entry into the series! It really shines with Mary's character work; she's an extremely sympathetic main character with an interesting backstory. The general mystery of the novel is good, though I think it suffers from the common symptom of 'the main character goes there and sees something crucial happening but doesn't actually do much' here.
All the side characters read sort of like a classic Victorian whodunnit and they're good to read through. The plot starts to slog a little towards the end, but it's otherwise a great read.

So pumped by the three-dimensional characterization of women in this book. The complete lack of hetero coupling at the end.... just lovely. So refreshing and much needed.
