While i loved the narrator of this audio book, i found the story itself fell so flat. It creeped along like a vibe growing along an old house. There were a few mildly spooky moments that i wish held more tension and suspense. I found the “big bad” to be kind of a lame reveal. Idk why i thought this was going to be a terrifying, spooky read. It was okay!

For a horror book I didn't find it particularly scary. It has a couple creepy moments, but as things fell into place, it didn't really read as 'horror' to me. The characters were solid and the mystery of the book was interesting. I enjoyed it, and read it pretty quickly, but I don't think it's one I would really reach for again.

I really enjoyed reading this. This book was just so full of character. I love the way the author writes. Each character has so much personality. This is a first person book I can get behind. Sam had such a hilarious inner monologue and I loved her relationship with her mother.
The whole time I didn’t have a clue about what was going on. Which is good when it comes to mystery novels. Also the botany, entomology, and southern gothic elements really tickled my interests. Maybe bug and rose facts aren’t for everyone but they certainly are for me! The book took a dramatic turn that I wasn’t expecting at all. It was kinda super horrifying. Spine-chilling I would say.
I’m glad I chose to read other book by this author because this one was so much better.

Haunted house story with a lady who studies. Gus and her mother. Her grandma doesn’t leave the house when she dies and.

3.5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It was my first T. Kingfisher's book, and I was super excited to read it! And it was great...for the last quarter of the 200 and some change book.

I found that I could barely make it through the first hundred pages, which felt dry and boring as far as plot establishment goes and when we finally got to the twist I was just ready for it to be over. The writing and characters and descriptions saved it A LOT, and there were some great creepy horror elements. But, it was ultimately disappointing. I wished there had been better lead up cause the beginning 3/4 of ths book felt so disconnected from the last quarter.
