Worthy of 5 stars for what Shelley attempted to do and succeeded at (but mostly for her beautiful writing style). After reading Frankenstein and now Matilda, I would definitely pick more of Shelley’s works up! The Gothic style was seen more in the taboo topics discussed over spooky settings and melodrama.

Honestly, the plot of this short novel is strange. I can see where many people would be put off due to the incestuous tendencies, suicide, and harm to other people’s’ mental health. Even though no incest actually occurred and the suicide occurred off the page, the main characters, Matilda and her father, were not good people. You cannot blame then, however; they were left to their own devices and not able to properly grieve.
