I started off skeptical but ended up loving it. Ann Brashares delivers another beautiful tale of friendship. I just hope she breaks away from the formula of it always being summer (why not let us see the girls in school?) plus I don't think there was a need to point out the existence of the Sisterhood so blatantly. Just let the reader find them.

Better than I expected and definitely worth reading.

Tugged at the heartstrings!

As a huge fan of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books, I had to finally read this one as it is set in the same universe. I didn't love these girls like I do Bee, Tibby, Lena, and Carmen, but the book was very well written and at times heart-breaking. And, just like in the Traveling Pants books, the issues faced by the characters are easy to identify with.
lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

It took me a while to really get into this, but by the time I did, the story had me. I think of the three girls, I enjoyed Ama's story the most. I wanted the book to stop cutting back to Jo and her summertime fling and go back to what was happening with Ama.

12/20- so far I like it a lot, but weak compared to the Sisterhood. I love how she puts in references to the characters.
12/21- I finished it and she used the Sisterhood so much it was more like a commercial for it. That was very disappointing. By the end it was a drag and I didn't really like the characters that much, especially Jo. I didn't like her. She was like some sort of substitute for Bridget, but not as cool.

Sweet additional twist to the traveling pants series

Ann Brashares redeemed herself (in my mind) with this novel. I read her traveling pants series and really enjoyed it. Then she wrote an adult novel that was weird for me and had a confusing romance. This book is just like the Traveling Pants and really caught the essence of teenage life for girls. It was a very fun read for me.

At first I wished that she hadn't connected the story to the traveling pants, thinking she was trying to play off all the hype from that series. But the 3 main characters, Jo, Polly, and Ama, are so removed and different from the 4 characters in the pants books that it worked out all right. The previous books were only mentioned in passing and it was kind of neat to catch the remembrances.

I look forward to more books in the series!
