Jo, Ama and Polly have been friends since 3rd grade, but things start to change as the girls get ready to begin high school.
Part of me wanted this to be more like the "Sisterhood" books and I was a little disappointed when it wasn't.

Best friends forever? Does that really ever happen? We read about if before with Lena, Tibby, Carmen and Bridget but what happens when they grow up and leave. This is where our story takes us, to new generation of sisterhood of Jo, Polly and Ama. Yet their sisterhood died once grade 8 hit. Now that the girls are going into high school will the sisterhood mend or break off completely.
I did not like Ama that much. She gets an opportunity to go somewhere and do something productive. If your summer is like mine, you would kill to be Ama. Yet in the end I believe she did the right thing. There’s nothing to fear but fear itself and she proved that.
For Jo I had to keep reminding myself that she’s fourteen. For me this book would have made a lot more sense if she was seventeen or even sixteen, but fourteen? I didn't mind the guy. Yeah it’s hard to believe but they weren't doing anything wrong. It was the older girls who would only be sixteen to nineteen smoking and Jo seemed okay with it. Rule for going into high school, don’t do drugs or befriend anyone who does.
Yet my least favorite was Polly. Sweet little Polly was the one I couldn't stand. I believe what she was in this book was too much. I don’t mind girls with her story line, but how it started I wasn't happy with. Also with a book such a quick read and Polly having to share it with Jo and Ama it seemed like the writer had to make Polly do something and that seemed like the easiest option. I believe if we had more background on Polly it would make more sense but with such a quick book it seemed unnecessary giving us a different spin on who Polly was.
If you haven’t finish the Sisterhoods series please do so before you read this book. There are little spoilers in Three Willows about the sisters of the traveling pants. There not major spoiler, for myself I am waiting for the third summer of sisterhood. Yet there is something that you wish you didn't know about Tibby, Lena and Effie. Yet Jo, Ama and Polly are still connected to each other. Watch as they grow and entwine into three beautiful willows.

So, this is the new Sisterhood. I love the way Brashares connects all the girls...with the Sisterhood being a legend at their high school, and the funny stories of how other groups of friends tried to emulate them. Couldn't be done. But Ama, Jo, and Polly DO create a bond just as strong, just as supportive in their own way. As elementary students, they plant willow tree seedlings by the bank of a stream in a park. They move on, and apart and forget about the willows who do what willows do best, grow, root, survive.
The formula is the same: the girls spend their summer (this time the summer before high school) apart, each learning lessons about who she is and what she needs to do in order to continue to grow, like the willows.
I laughed through Ama's misery on her outdoors adventure. Bugs, tents, hiking books -- I feel your pain! Jo is still dealing with the death of her beloved brother, watching her parents' relationship fall apart. And Polly finally has to face the truth about her mother, but in the process nearly loses herself.
The metaphor of the willow is perfect! tenacious, sheltering, healing...I'm looking forward to these Willows growing up!

I liked it ... a little bit predictable at times. I loved how each chapter started with interesting facts about willow trees.
Excellent book. I loved how it was so different from the Sisterhood series, yet enveloped you in the same way.
This is a fairly good story, tackling many of the thorny issues adolescent girls face in modern life in a kind and thoughtful way. I think the tangential connection to the original sisterhood is gimmicky, and this story would've been better off as a standalone. It's not related to the original books enough to be meaningful, and a reader is more likely to be disappointed with the tenuous connection Van anything else.
Before I get into any details about the book, I just want to start by saying that anyone who is a fan of Ann Brashare's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series should definitely add this book to their reading list.
3 Willows follows three friends during the summer before they enter high school. Polly, Ama and Jo have been friends since third grade. However, their friendships were starting to fade. As they each face their own challenges during the summer, they begin to realize who their true friends really are.
Jo spends her summer at the family beach house with her mom and lands a job as a waitress at a popular tourist restaurant. After a fling with an older boy, rumors spread, showing her who she can really trust.
Ama spends her summer at a high school credit program hiking, an activity that she hates. Now she has to survive a summer with an annoyinng tent mate...and no flat iron!
Polly has a lot in mind for this summer, lots of changes for herself.
I really like the new Sisterhood that Ann Brashares created. It was very different from the original Sisterhood, because I believe that Carmen, Tibby, Bridget and Lena knew that their friendship would last, no matter what. For Polly, Ama and Jo, they had a little more of a hard time finding their place and knowing that they would always be there for each other.
Also, Ann Brashares brought back a few of her characters. Sometimes they were just mentioned, but othertimes they played an important role in the story's plot. Look for them while you read.
I do have one piece of criticism, however. Ann Brashares tried to create a new Sisterhood for us to fall in love with. But I didn't feel as connected with this Sisterhood as I did with the original. Ann Brashares is still a great writer and I do enjoy reading anything she writes. So if you are a fan of her work, read this book. A quick read that is just perfect for the summer.

Wasn't as good as the original series by Ann. It was a great book overall. It just seemed too similar to the Travelling Pants, which were great.
I expected a little more from Brashares. A little dry and slow at times.
This book took me back to the beginning of high school and how awkward things get with friends. It centers on the lives of 3 girls who were best friends but who have grown apart. While most of the novel is about their separate stories in the end they reconnect. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would even go as far as to say I like it better than the Travelling Pants books.
