The story has so many sad elements from
incredibly hard long-distance to caring for a loved one with dementia
, but still it manages to be incredibly hopeful. The events are very spaced out, taking place over many months, to showcase the slow reality the characters live: there are no quick fixes or solutions to their situation, but they need to work their way for their end game.

The slow narration didn't let me get as attached to the main characters as I have gotten in previous books by Jimenez, even though I learned a lot about Sam and Xavier, and their feelings got through to me.

This is not my favourite book by Jimenez, but I'd nevertheless recommend reading it.

I feel like this book dragged me all around with my emotions. I would be laughing, then cringing, then crying. A little too much
animal death and cruelty
for my liking, but it was good to see the characters in their own elements. This was a story unlike one I've ever read, so thanks for that.

I absolutely love Abby’s books, but this one didn’t do it for me. While the audiobook was phenomenal and the narrators did amazing, the storyline was just missing something for me. I had a difficult time for how much Xavier gave up and how run down he became for Samantha. It personally just rubbed me the wrong way I guess? This feeling just stuck with me throughout the book and made me enjoy it less.
