[The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst. Showing a greenhouse in a purplish snowy scene. In the front, three pieces of honey cake and a cup with some liquid].
That was absolutely lovely. I preordered this book, and saved it for a figurative rainy day, and so glad I did. I knew it dealt with the creator of Caz, the sentient spider plant from book one, but I thought it was a prequel.
It is not. After the events of The Spellshop, Caz's statuesque creator is dropped off on an all but deserted island--one which had priorly belonged to a Sorcerer (now deceased) who created a magnificence series of magical greenhouses, and now has only one grumpy misanthropic gardener to tend it through the failing spell.
As with book one, we have grumpy/sunshine (flipped this time) and learning to live and compromise without actually changing who they are, found family, absolute coziness, and delicious sounding foods. Make yourself some honey cake ahead of time...you can thank me later.
Highly recommend, obviously. I paired with Ghibli music.
Honey cake recipe:
Oven 350*
Dry:
1c All purpose flour
1/4c whole wheat flour
1/2c light brown sugar
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp baking soda
1/2tsp salt
1/2tsp ground cardamom
1/2tsp ground cinnamon
Wet:
1/2c honey
1/2c total of butter and decent olive oil (roughly half and half)
1/2c hot water (use to melt the butter and dissolve the honey)
1tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
Preheat oven. Prep a 9" round pan by greasing and flouring.
Whisk the dry ingredients together.
Mix the eggs into the rest of the wet ingredients once those have cooled to body temp or cooler.
Gently mix the dry into the wet, getting the lumps out but not overmixing.
Pour into prepped pan, and bake for 35-40min, removing from oven when a knife comes out clean.
Use a chopstick to poke a bunch of holes in the cake.
Gently heat 1/4stick of butter, 1oz orange brandy (or regular, or rum, etc), and 1/4c honey until liquid and butter is melted. Pour some or all over the still hot cake, going to preference and feel. (Leftovers can be poured over individual slices, or...have more brandy added like hot buttered rum as I did).
