Love this book, the end was so good, cant wait to read the next book.
Once again this series continues to surprise me... I have read each book as kind of an obligation to keep the series going that I started with the first book, but I have finally realized with this book that I am now anxiously waiting for Michael Vey 5 to arrive on shelves in 2015. Evans has created in Taylor, Michael, Ostin, Nichelle, Hatch, et al., characters that instantly pop into mind when reading the exploits of the protagonists and antagonists and the seemingly impossible situations they are in, such as rescuing Jade Dragon from a compound more heavily guarded and escape proof than Alcatraz. The mark of a good book in this type setting is finding yourself praying that with each page turned the good guys survive at the expense of the bad guys. This book delivers that and much more. This series is marked as young adult, but I believe anyone could enjoy diving into these exciting tales.
I mean, not bad. Michael Vey series has been pretty good so far. I like it, but I'm not like so completely in love with the series, which is why it's not on my favorites list. Also, some of the characters are really annoying. AKA Tessa. She's so rude and annoying and I kinda hate her. Also it's weird because I keep forgetting the characters are like 15. Sometimes they act 15, sometimes they act kinda immature and like 9 years old (well not as much as the series progresses) and sometimes they act really old because after being considered terrorists and fighting the Elgen, they realize life isn't always great. Also, I found some of the stuff kind of offensive..? Mostly because I'm Asian, I guess. It's not really a big deal. But like, Taiwan is not the same as China. Also, what fifteen year old doesn't know what Taiwan is? The kids were like 'oh we're going to Taiwan? What's that?' Like seriously? Also, Taiwanese food is not the same as Chinese food. Okay, it is pretty similar but it's probably very different than the 'Chinese food' that's in America. Chinese restaurants like Panda Express and whatever are like Americanized and it's kinda different than Chinese food from China. If you want good, authentic Chinese food in America, go to a Chinese restaurant with a lot of Asians. Also, China is a big country and the food is slightly different depending on where in the country you are. I've never been to Taiwan but I'm sure that the food there is different than mainland China. Anyway, yeah. Little things like that was basically the only thing that pissed me off. But this book, like the rest of the series was easy, not too hard to read, kinda fast. Even though the main characters are 15 and it's considered YA, it feels like it's on the border between YA and children's book, but leans a little more towards YA. If that makes sense...
The only word that sums up my feelings about this book is: meh. I mean, the romance dynamic between Michael and Taylor felt EXTREMELY forced, and the way the author wrote it was like every time there was a problem in the relationship, it was always Taylor’s fault. And don’t even get me STARTED on the climax(?). The book was building it up the entire time, but honestly, the most exciting part was when I finished it.
Another series that I have been able to enjoy along with my kids. The adventures of the Electroclan continue in this book, which takes place largely in Taiwan. As with the others, the ending leaves you waiting for the next book to come out. I listened to the audiobook and one thing that really stuck out (and annoyed me) was that the author used "said" an awful lot during the dialogue. It would have been nice for a little variety in that regard. I'm also not sure what I think about the author switching so much between first person and third person narratives, but I understand why it was needed. We're all looking forward to the next book!
