A lovely illustrated book, though it felt a bit short and too easily solved for me.

Birgitta Sif’s other book Oliver really stuck with me (about imagination and empathy), so when I was told about Frances Dean, I knew I had to read it. Frances Dean is a kindred spirit who finds true joy in dancing; however, she soon notices that others are judging her, so she stops. But she then realizes that if she doesn’t dance, she isn’t happy, so she embraces who she is. This book is about empowerment and not hiding one’s gift.

France's Dean loves to dance, but only when people aren't around. Eventually, she learns to shake of her self-consciousness and "dance like no one's watching."

Really enjoyed this sweet picture book though I felt the story didn't end on enough of a cadence. It was like one of those songs that you absolutely love the whole way through but then it ends by fading out on a whimper rather than with assuredness and that feeling of "YEAH!" when the last confident note resounds.

I loved the art style in this book! It was kind of sketchy looking (like you could see the pencil lines in some places) and very whimsical. The story was very cute and I am a fan of Frances Dean, her passion for dance made me smile. I only wish we could have seen more on how she got the courage to show everyone her dancing- I feel like that may have been special for others (myself included!) who sometimes struggle with showing off talents.

Cute central message - believe in yourself, don't worry about what others are thinking
The illustrations are beautiful. I can't wait to go back to the story to look at them again!
There seems to be just a little something missing from the writing. I expected there to be more between the girl who loved music and Frances Dean. Maybe I was reading into it too much?

Fantastic story about a girl who loves to dance, but is hesitant to share that with the world. I especially liked the emphasis on the idea that she loved dancing, rather than if she were good at it. In the end her joy is infectious and inspires everyone around her.

I loved so much about this book. The text itself is a lovely message about living your passions, taking small steps, and shedding anxieties. But the illustrations truly take this book to another level. I settled in with a few children at lunch yesterday and we spent fifteen minutes exploring the pictures, talking about the eyes, and discussing the motivation of the characters. Fantastic!

Young Frances Dean develops the courage to share her dancing talent with others in this picture book about overcoming shyness and celebrating creativity.
