I suspect I simply wasn't at the right time of life to read this book. I think it's well written, but I didn't enjoy it, really. Too much women's angst for me right now, I think. Don't get me wrong, I've had my share of women's angst. But I kinda don't enjoy reading about it any more.

And I REALLY didn't like some of the choices they made in the movie.

Just cranky, I guess.

After reading this book once before and seeing the movie twice (albeit many years ago), I was still blown away by the relationship reveal at the end. And Cunningham's mastery of language is always a pleasure.

frankly it’s a little scary how well michael cunningham is able to portray a woman’s suffering

Some of the writing was beautiful, brilliant even--though some was overwrought and I got tired of all the times the narrator said "at this moment..." to add weight or a sense of urgency or whatever it was he was trying to convey. I liked the way the book was structured--the three women's lives and the weaving in of Mrs. Dalloway (which I read so long ago I can barely remember). I love the license the author took in imagining the life and thoughts of Virginia Woolf. However, other than Woolf, I found I really didn't care about any of the main characters. Even though so much of what the reader learns about them is what is going on in their interior lives, this reader never really felt connected to them or even empathetic. That, to me, is a big deficit (though I feel a bit ridiculous criticizing a Pulitzer prize-winning book). I listened to the book as read by the author and I found his voice and rhythm kind of grating. On the other hand, I'm not sure I could have gotten through the print (or e-) version, mainly because of the fact that I did not care about the characters.

Throughly enjoyed this book, Cunningham relates the main characters really cleverly between the different time periods. I feel that he gets into Woolf's pysche. The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 was because I struggled to understand the Mrs Brown character

Overall a really great book that I couldn't put down, was a quick read too! I can see how it won awards
