If you are a writer, this is an excellent study of structure. Discovering how the different motifs unfold and repeat themselves between the 3 point of view characters makes for a fun little puzzle, and the prose is wonderfully rich. The different characters' ruminations on the meaning and value of life and how a life should be spent are also pleasing.

(When this book first came out, I set it aside for being too pretentious, too obnoxious, but I found it a quick, pleasant read this time around.)

Wow. Just wow.

It's a book where nothing happens but everything happens. It's real life made interesting. At least, that was my impression of it.

For those that don't know or haven't seen the movie, the main character in the movie Liberal Arts often pulls this book off the shelves to read the last few pages whenever he's in the bookstore because they're just so devastating. And I completely agree with that. It also let me know that I wasn't the only freak with the urge to do that.

If anything, read this book just to get to the last few pages. They make it totally worth it.

Such a good book.

Time is flexible. Survival is simply a matter of making it from a bad hour back to a good hour. What you dream of in your head will always, inevitably, be flawed in its manifestation.

Favorite Quotes:

You want to give him the book of his own life, the book that will locate him, parent him, arm him for the changes.

She, Laura, likes to imagine (it’s one of her most closely held secrets) that she has a touch of brilliance herself, just a hint of it, though she knows most people probably walk around with similar hopeful suspicions curled up like tiny fists inside them, never divulged.

She is full of love so strong, so unambiguous, it resembles appetite.

Maybe there is nothing, ever, that can equal the recollection of having been young together.

A darker read. Enjoyed the writing style, time period and stories. Surprised how much I enjoyed this book.
