I watched the movie first, and I hate doing that! I want my own vision of the book, imagining it my way, the characters, the settings, the plot, the theme.
Here, Cunningham interlaces three eras, three women, all connected and interconnected by the hours in one day in their lives, by one writing a book, Mrs. Dolloway, by one reading it, Laura Brown, and by one, Clarissa Vaughn, giving life to that fictional character in the eyes of a dying man.
What we get here is a story about loneliness, despair, desperation, and alienation, not only of physical beings, but of emotions.
What drew me in was Cunningham's attempt at emulating Virginia Woolf's writing style, which I love, and which Cunningham succeeded, in my humble opinion.

Excellent novel. Such careful sentences written with an elegance reminiscent of Olive Kitteridge.

When I was younger, I had a closet with mirrored doors. I could make a triangle out of them and stand in the middle. Then, in every direction I looked, I saw reflections of reflections of me. Reading The Hours reminded me of that private funhouse experience.
Have managed to avoid the film so I could read the book. Absolutely loved it. So engrossing and evocative of the books it references.
