Didn’t feel like I was made to ~really~ care about the characters until the very end. The characters names also made it really hard to follow along with differentiating who was who

The stylistics of this book is truly something else. It is occasionally very reminiscent of Woolf's own writing. Not a single character in the book conforms to the system of categorising people and labelling their human complexity with names, which was very refreshing to see since today everything has to be openly and clearly labelled. The book casually deals with many issues, the most apparent two being LGBT themes and mental health. Woolf's story attracted me the most because Virginia is an occasionally-struggling writer with storm raging in her mind. There was something oddly comforting in the way all these characters were a bit lost and always sticking to playing roles and wearing masks, something that I found very relatable and made me feel less insane and alone.

Joskus luen tai kuuntelen kirjoja väärällä hetkellä. Tätä kuuntelin äänikirjana samalla kun kävelytin koiria ja itkin, joten en saanut tästä kamalasti irti. Kirjoitan tämän itselleni muistiin, että voin joskus antaa kirjalle uuden mahdollisuuden.

This book was a truly unique and amazing story because it actually brings something new and valuable out of an idea that could have ended up feeling recycled. Reading this book gives you new appreciation for life, regardless of who and where you are when you read it. Further props must be given because this book was also adapated into an equally successful movie that produces many of the same feelings. It is, for once, an achievement to finish a book version of somethingyou have already seen the movie version, and think, wow, they did a good job with both of these.
