One of the best books I’ve read this year, and one of my favorites of Le Guin’s. The world building? Incredible. The moral duality? Flawless. I like Le Guins anger here. Read this!!

Contender for favourite book of the year. Incredible writing with beautiful prose, and great commentary on how colonialism changes everyone and thing it touches

I came to this book as it was described as Avatar...but better.
I actually wanted a lot more from it as it was clever. I feel like the creators of Avatar used this as inspirational material (at the very least). There are a number of parallels to our own history and even present time.
The main thing that annoyed me was the acronyms! why so many it was quite confusing.

A short but idea-rich science fiction novel about a planet inhabited by small, furry green humanoids who find themselves colonized by humans. The Terran invaders cut down their trees and enslave and rape the native population. The humans believe that the inhabitants of the planet are incapable of violence, but they learn from their invaders, and the humans are proven wrong.
Many elements of the story make this a clear metaphor for the US involvement in Vietnam, such as the power of guerrilla tactics against occupying forces, the use of “fire jelly” by the humans, the rogue units torching villages, and references to the chief antagonist’s anti-Asian racism. This book is more explicitly referential to a specific historical event than most of Le Guin’s science fiction, which always has something to say about the real world, but usually it’s not so directly metaphorical.
Not quite on the same level as The Dispossessed or The Left Hand of Darkness (two other entries in the Hainish Cycle that I’ve read) but a thought-provoking read as always from Le Guin.
