Decent, I haven't read much Le Guin in my time, other than a few sparse short stories here and there and a half hearted attempt at Wizard of Earth Sea years ago when I wasn't as well read as I am now.

I wouldn't start out with this one, while the ideas of colonization, idealist societies, and dreams into reality are used really well in this novella, they're a bit heavy handed in their use.

Same with the characters, they all play a "role" in the novella rather than being an actual character, Villain, Messiah, Traitor, etc. I think I would've retained more names and read through it quicker if it wasn't all so dry.

Mijn eerste Le Guin-boek en ik ben niet teleurgesteld. Voordat ik aan het boek begon, twijfelde ik of ik de introductie-stukken moest lezen. Dat heb ik uiteindelijk toch gedaan en daardoor wist ik dat Le Guin dit boek schreef ten tijde, of vlak na, de Vietnam-oorlog. Dat merk je niet alleen door de thema's in het boek zelf, en de antropologische observaties die Le Guin maakt, maar ook omdat één personage, waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Vietnam, verwijst naar de Vietnam-oorlog die in dit boek generaties geleden heeft plaatsgevonden. En als ik dan denk aan de gebeurtenissen in 2025, dan vraag ik me af wat de auteur daarvan had gevonden.

Ik vond het mooi om te zien hoe niet alleen in het boek wordt onderzocht hoe het imperialisme en kolonialisme van de mens lokale wezens op andere planeten op een negatieve manier kunnen veranderen (en dan denk ik ook aan hoe de homo sapiens onze eigen aarde heeft veranderd, of hoe het Westen de rest van de wereld door hun imperialisme heeft veranderd), maar ook dat Le Guin de culturele verschillen tussen de mensen en de Athsheans in dit korte boekje uitvoerig heeft onderzocht. Een leuk taal-detail vind ik bijvoorbeeld dat de Atsheans de mensen van planeet aarde niet 'humans' noemt, maar 'yumens' - en dat het woord voor 'forest' hetzelfde is als het woord voor 'wereld' voor de Athseans, omdat hun hele wereld bestaat uit een groot, oud bos.

As simple as this book might seem, as 'classic' as pulp fiction goes, it has everything. The dialogue between different levels and shades of colonization is the core of this and it's magnificently made. I also strongly suggest the audiobook.
