Grace is my kind of heroine!! She's fierce! I loved the danger and adventure!

4.5 stars rounded up.
“Fate double-crossed us again,” he murmured, releasing his hold on her. He caressed her cheek in the darkness. “Apparently, you’re still not meant for me.” His voice lowered to little more than a whisper, one laced with hopelessness. “But I so very much wanted you to be.”

These words are from Ross and, when they are spoken, they risk tearing out one’s heart for all the anguish in that moment. This was a wonderful story. Two people brought down by people and circumstances who find strength in themselves and one another.

Everyone has SECRETS!!!!! I honestly can't really remember this one either. I'm sure it was fine. They learned to love AND trust. I bet she got to redecorate.

To be honest, this is not my favorite trope in Regency historical romances. The noble spy on the run who's saved by the strong woman he falls in love with as they careen through England. Ross Carlisle is an Earl who's been accused of treason. He escapes from a ship in a storm and ends up in the cottage of Grace Alden. Grace has her own secrets; she's trying to hide from her dead husband's brother who has taken her son Ethan's legacy and estates. Together they must prove Ross's innocence so he can help Grace regain Ethan's title.
The writing is fine, though in some places a bit modern, and the characters are exactly what you'd expect. Grace is beautiful though she has a scar on her face due to an attempt on her life. She's been posing as a fisherman's widow for ten years until Ross shows up. Ross is the dashing rake who wants to be an ambassador someday. His faithful brother Kit works for the Home Office and shows up when needed to help (or not if it means Grace or Ross can take off on another escapade).
There's madcap stunts and banter that I'm sure a lot of people will like. Maybe it's just me who's tired of this plot, but it took me a while to get through the story. Something about it just didn't grab me. I've only read one of Ms. Harrington's novellas and I felt pretty much the same, but I'm sure other readers can enjoy this book a lot.

This was a very fun book, with two strong, and entertaining main characters, and a host of other Carlisle men in the backdrop. “Grace" and “Christopher” both have secrets, including their true identities. They both need each other to reach London and reclaim their birthrights. On the way, the romance is hot and the action is fast-paced. I can’t wait to catch up with my Anna Harrington backlist, and for the next in the series next year.
