Bleak and heartbreaking. From the start you can tell there's no hope in this world but the story is gripping anyway and you hope against hope there's some solace for the characters. There isn't, really.

I guess, coming off from several books about WW11 and suicide and rape and such, I didn’t feel the book to be as “gut wrenching” or “traumatic” as others. I also don’t think it’s well written?? And I didn’t find it riveting? Truthfully, I struggled to finish. I dreaded reading it. I think it might only be getting a second star bc of its reputation? It’s a no for me.
