LOVED IT. Occasionally plodding, but not slow. And appropriately paced -- I can't imagine this story being told any other way with any credibility. A moving description of true hardship, exhaustion, and an utter lack of hope, punctuated by gorgeous -- but not gushing -- examples of a father's pure devotion to his son. I think people who might find it "too depressing" might be a little short-sighted. Rather than being a good story by being a *satisfying* story, The Road instead gets its strength from the craft of storytelling itself. Not every story worth telling comes with feel-good moments, and think this is a great example of that. I imagine this is exactly how a post-apocalyptic world would be (minus the zombies, of course).

The Road was recommended to me by an English teacher in high-school. I was chatty and disruptive and bored, but this book managed to shut me up and keep me sucked in through the whole thing. I don't care what anyone says about this book, it is one of my favorites and will be for a long time. Another book I'll be returning too soon now that I'm a little older and have more time and capacity for the story.
