Hopeless and empty. I understand that love is a prevailing theme yet I couldn't sympathize with any of the characters and just finished the book with an apathetic sort of feeling.

What a beautiful and poetic read. McCarthy’s writing here is so restrained and to the point, but still manages to evoke strong ideas. In a world where there is little left, what is the point? Why continue to be good when your survival is on the line? Who do you turn to for wisdom in a godless, barren wasteland?
I loved the unique style of refusing pronouns or explicit dialogue notation. Keeping the characters as just “the man” and “the boy” made this story feel so much bigger and fable-like than it’s small scale. A reader can imagine an endless number of stories just like this taking place elsewhere in the world. What makes these two characters heroes, or good guys?
Also, without chapters, passages adopt a stanza-like quality that builds in the already poetic prose. There are so many beautiful lines about morality, nature, and faith - both in fellow man and whatever more there may be. 4.5 stars.
