To call the plot in this one a "mystery" is a bit of a stretch, honestly, though I was glad to be back in a gloomy manor setting. A certain character from Veronica's past is the highlight of the book (and yet I don't think we saw enough of him). I can't say too much without spoiling, but suffice to say that I thought this character was funny and endearing in his own way, even though
he's clearly not a good match for Veronica...or anyone, really
. I actually hope we see more of him in future books. It might be a lost cause, but I'm rooting for him to get his act together and find some semblance of peace.

Good to see some real conflict between Veronica and Stoker that will last. As much as I love them, I'm ready for them to unearth more of their trauma and see how that affects their relationship. Lol. 💀 We also got to learn more about Veronica's past and know that she wasn't always this badass, convention-breaking woman...I still wish we got more, though. More of how she was in those days, instead of her brushing it all off as youthful mistakes.
She was too unruffled by Harry's presence, IMO. There were moments of weakness wherein she felt like the naive young girl she used to be, but not enough to really hit me emotionally. Her outburst about feeling unworthy of love was great (sad, but great)! I wanted more of that.
The ending sets up an interesting premise for the next installment.
Seeing Veronica and Stoker separated for some time should be interesting...this has happened before, but we never followed along with them during that period of separation. It's very true to Stoker's character that he wasn't angry about Veronica's marriage to another man, but he was hurt that she hid the fact from him.

I think I sped through this one too quickly to wholly appreciate it. I binged the entire series in one go, so I suppose I'm a little worn out at this point. Now that I'll be forced to wait for the next book to come out, the anticipation will hopefully rekindle my intense love for the series :')
