A bunch of tough topics covered in this book but it was all handled incredibly well. I think the author did a fab job of creating believable characters and scary scenarios. Sometimes I find it frustrating when random things - in this case, pictures and info on flowers - are inserted into a narrative but it really worked here, and I loved how much Spey had taken in from Dee's passion about them. My biggest complaint was that I really disliked the font used for Benni!

“A friend in need is a friend indeed." — Proverbial.

Living in a broken home with his mother, Spey goes on a road trip from London to Hastings and Brighton to find his old friend, Dee, while teaming up with his ex-prisoner father (whom he has never met before). Spey’s mother gives him a letter containing only paper flowers revealing that there might be something off-putting about Dee’s correspondence. Thus, Spey journeys around the country to find clues on Dee’s whereabouts and hopefully, sustain their old friendship.
I don’t want to give much away, but this YA mystery/odyssey brings a lot of emotion for parental and friendship warmth. It keeps the reader on its toes until the very end, and you’ll appreciate the voyage throughout.

Patrice Lawrence is back with another hard hitting contemporary, this time with a focus on county lines. A slow start made this a tough novel to get into but the ending was much stronger. A very important story, especially for young people today.
